impact @ porter square gallery 2008

impact @ j.p. art market 2008

the term impact often describes the action of one object coming forcibly into another. this piece, comprised of 3,468 individually hand-molded replicas of human teeth, is coaxing out these collisions. some of the teeth are treated with ink or stain, or are inscribed with two or three words to reiterate the oral connection between teeth and speech, or the more abstract connections between teeth and thoughts or teeth as thoughts. teeth grow, live, rot, and die, like seeds. but separated from the jaw or the earth, both lie in the palm, silent and dry: thoughts of something to come or memories of something that passed.

impact has been exhibited in both an interactive and noninteractive space. i prefer the former, as the investigations each viewer makes can deepen exponentially when they are allowed to "sift" through the table, searching, searching.
